PROVIDENCE – Collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in Rhode Island in November declined 10.1 percent year over year to $237,605, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Monday.
The decline was primarily driven by a 9.8 percent decline in revenue from traditional hotels from $247,660 to $223,480, but also included a 35.1 percent decline in collection from room resellers and hosting platforms to $3,824 one year later. Collections from realtors and homeowners remained relatively stable from one year prior, declining 4 percent to $10,302.
The largest nominal decline in collection in the state was in Newport, where collection declined 23.5 year over year to $45,767 in November, driven by a decline in collections from hotels from $54,396 to $39,360.
Fiscal year to date, collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in the state in November declined 4 percent to $2.8 million. Unlike the November collections, the fiscal-year-to-date collections decline was mostly a decline in collection from realtors and homeowners, falling 19.7 percent to $369,733. Collections from hotels also declined, from $2.34 million to $2.31 million. Collections from room resellers and hosting platforms in that time increased 6.7 percent to $69,139.
