To the editor:

In response to your article “Tightening economy squeezing charities (January 15-21, 2001) we at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank are gratified that our donors stand by us and our mission to end hunger, despite an uncertain economy. We empathize with other organizations and their worthwhile causes that are being hurt by decreased contributions. However, we also want to give credit to the many Rhode Islanders who continue to make it possible for us to provide a basic necessity — food- – to people who are struggling with low incomes and mounting bills. With the faithful backing of our community, we provided more food to more people in the past year than at any other time in our history, and we were able to do this because of the increased contributions of our donors. As the need grows, we trust our supporters will remain steadfast.

Bernie Beaudreau, executive director
R.I. Community Food Bank
