WICKFORD – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management yesterday opened a newly reconstructed marine base for the department’s Division of Law Enforcement.
The Wickford Marine Base, on Mill Cove in the Wickford Village working waterfront historic district, will serve as headquarters for the division’s marine unit. It will provide boat docking and maintenance, “shore-side support” and an emergency situations operations center for law-enforcement operations, the DEM said.
The building is part of a $2.7 million project at the site that also included the installation of a new, 260-foot fiberglass bulkhead with a pre-cast concrete cap, the renovation of a steel-framed workshop that got new overhead doors, a new foor and a bridge crane, and the construction of an energy-efficient 3,900-square-foot building, the DEM said.
The Law Enforcement Division marine base was designed by Lisa Lawless, a principal civil engineer in the DEM Division of Planning and Development, with local input from the North Kingstown Planning Department, the Wickford Historic District Commission, the Conservation Commission, the Harbor Management Commission and the North Kingstown Town Council.
Contractor for the project was Maron Construction of Providence. Financing was through a combination of state and federal funds.
