Gov. Gina M. Raimondo recently unveiled the state’s free “Crush COVID RI” mobile app. It can be used to track where people go to help state health officials with contact tracing if someone using the app gets the new coronavirus.
Raimondo is not requiring residents to use the app but hopes the vast majority of people do so. The app includes a GPS tracking feature that can be disabled.
But the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island sees potential privacy and individual-rights concerns if the app is used incorrectly, either by the state or potentially by employers.
Does containing the spread of the virus trump all concerns, including individual privacy rights?
