The Mass. Department of Transportation board of directors last week approved a contract for new state-of-the-art replacement buses for the Mass. Bay Transit Authority fleet, Boston Business Journal reported.
The $222.2 million contract with New Flyer Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba, calls for delivery of 325 new 40-foot hybrid and compressed natural gas buses to begin in July 2016, with all buses in service by June 2017.
The 325 buses will replace a current fleet of compressed natural gas buses nearing the end of their expected 12-year service life, according to BBJ.
The contract is expected to be funded with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent MBTA revenue bond funds, according to the MBTA.
