City Councilman Terrence M. Hassett will ask the Providence City Council to approve a resolution authorizing Mayor David N. Cicilline to initiate the proceedings to sell the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for fair market value.
The announcement to possibly sell the former Providence Civic Center came Tuesday afternoon.
The resolution would authorize the mayor as the city’s chief administrator to initiate proceedings to solicit proposals toward the sale. The deadline would be Sept. 1 for accepting applications of interest. Hassett said in a release he wants to see the sale completed no later than Jan. 1, 2005.
The council’s Committee on City Property must review any proposal and make a recommendation to the full council.
Hassett reports that a failure by the state to approve a consolidation plan for the operations of the city-owned facility and the state-owned convention center “reflects lack of interest in the civic center and in the detrimental position it places the city in every year.”
The civic center reportedly needs $40 million in investments for capital improvements.
