EAST PROVIDENCE – The City Council recently voted to authorize Mayor Roberto L. DaSilva to purchase new turnout gear for the East Providence Fire Department, making it the first department in the state to wear fire equipment without the use of polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.
PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” are connected to several health issues. According to the National Cancer Institute, PFAS chemicals are classified as human carcinogens as of 2023.
“We need to get it [PFAS] off our people as fast as we can,” said Fire Chief Michael Carey during an Aug. 7 council meeting.
DaSilva thanked councilors for supporting the purchase.
The cost of replacing care for members of the fire department is $658,000 and is paid through American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The council’s decision comes as both chambers in the Mass. General Court (state legislature) approved bills that would ban the sale of firefighting gear containing PFAS by 2027.
Carey said there were no PFAS-free alternatives for firefighting gear until recently, but when it became available, the fire department began discussions with the manufacturer.
Fire crews have begun the fitting process for their new gear and once those are complete, the order will be submitted. The fire department expects gear will be manufactured, delivered and into service within 90 days.
