Hopkinton, Mass. based EMC Corp.,
the biggest maker of computer-data storage systems, has created
storage products designed for small and midsize companies and
aimed at competing with Hewlett-Packard Co. machines.
The first to be marketed is the Clariion CX600, which
operates at three times the speed of older Clariions, David
Donatelli, EMC executive vice president, said in an interview. The
cabinets’ data-storage capacity is about a quarter of EMC’s top-
tier storage product, called Symmetrix.
EMC is trying to increase its share of sales to smaller and
midsize companies, an area dominated by Compaq Computer Corp.,
which was bought recently bought by Hewlett-Packard. After cutting
prices of machines to compete with Compaq, International Business
Machines Corp. and others, EMC is trying boost sales of software,
which is more profitable.
The CX600 will cost $115,000 to $800,000, Donatelli said,
depending on capacity and features. The most expensive model will
hold 17.5 terabytes of data, or the equivalent of 17.5 million
novels, he said.
Less expensive Clariions are planned, Donatelli said. The
company may contract manufacturing of the least expensive model to
Dell Computer Corp., the No. 2 personal-computer maker. In
October, Dell agreed to resell some EMC data-storage systems for
five years. The companies have said the agreement might be
expanded to include Dell’s contract manufacturing of some EMC
machines and Dell helping EMC buy parts at a lower cost.
