NEW BEDFORD – Fishermen’s Energy LLC will hold a meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday to outline its request for proposal to establish a wind turbine installation off of New Bedford waters, The Herald News reported Sunday.
“We believe the fishing industry is not fully aware of the scale of development planned for offshore wind,” said a spokesman for New Jersey-based company to the newspaper. The meeting, aiming to explain what impacts water-based wind turbines have on fishing, will be held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
The project is slated for the Nantucket Lightship area and much of the Great South Channel, The Standard-Times reported.
“The areas selected for wind resource development by the Department of Interior include historically rich fishing grounds,” the spokesman added. “For Fishermen’s Energy it is important we engage other fishermen early in the process.”
The Herald News noted that Fishermen’s Energy believes offshore wind projects should provide direct mitigation payments to fishermen in situations where impacts are localized, specific and cannot be adequately addressed by other options.
