EAST PROVIDENCE – University Medicine, one of the largest nonprofit multispecialty medical groups in Rhode Island, has been named “Business of the Year” by the East Providence Area Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Angela M. Caliendo, vice president and director of general internal medicine at University Medicine, accepted the award at the chamber’s annual meeting held recently at the Metacomet Country Club in East Providence. EPACC Executive Director Laura McNamara and board Chair Arthur Dwyer presented the award.
“As one of the area’s largest employers, University Medicine is a vital part of our community’s well-being,” McNamara said. “A vibrant economy attracts workers and families, which in turn keeps neighborhoods stable and businesses thriving. University Medicine further cemented their commitment to jobs and health services in this area last year when they built their new Patient Center, which demonstrates great confidence in the growth of the chamber’s catchment area.”
University Medicine recently built a $6.5 million Patient Center at 375 Wampanoag Trail in East Providence. University Medicine is one of the largest nonprofit primary care, specialty outpatient and subspecialty medical groups in Rhode Island, with about 200 physicians and 400 employees.
University Medicine, headquartered at 17 Virginia Ave., Providence, is affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and employs most of the full-time faculty of Brown’s Department of Medicine. Specialties and clinical divisions include: general internal medicine; primary care (family and pediatrics); diabetes and endocrinology; infectious disease; hospital medicine; hypertension and kidney diseases; hematology/oncology; nephrology; pulmonary, critical care and sleep; gastroenterology; rheumatology; and geriatrics. More than 100,000 patients are served annually from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and other states and countries.
“University Medicine and the East Providence Area Chamber serve the same communities and share a common goal to be a valued resource to our community,” Caliendo said. “We are very proud of this award but want to acknowledge that all growth and success we’ve had to date has certainly been a group effort. To be recognized for this truly speaks to our outstanding team across the entire state.”
