February retail sales rise 0.6 percent

Sales at U.S. retailers rose 0.6 percent in February as consumers took advantage of higher tax
refunds to buy automobiles and shop at department stores, a
government report showed.

Last month’s gain to $327.2 billion follows a 0.2 percent
increase in January, previously reported as a decline, the
Commerce Department said in Washington. Excluding autos, sales
were unchanged at $249.9 billion, after a 1.2 percent increase in
January that was larger than first estimated.
