The shareholders of Providence-based First Financial Corp., parent company of First Bank and Trust Company, Wednesday voted to approve the acquisition of First Financial by Westerly-based Washington Trust Bancorp, Inc.
A special meeting of shareholders was held at the Westin Hotel in Providence for the purpose of approving the merger. The merger remains subject to certain federal and state regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed early in the second quarter of 2002.
