Gas prices continue at record high

PROVIDENCE – Lower crude oil prices last week kept gasoline prices from rising even further in Rhode Island, AAA Southern New England said Monday, but the cost per gallon hasn’t dropped, either, remaining at last week’s record $2.42 per gallon for self-serve, regular unleaded.

Prices had increased for six consecutive weeks before leveling off. The current price is 45 cents higher than the $1.97 found a year ago at this time, AAA said.

The nonprofit auto club stressed that prices continue to vary substantially, with self-serve unleaded ranging from $2.34 to $2.49 this week. Premium is averaging $2.63, with self-serve ranging from $2.55 to $2.76. Diesel is averaging $2.51, with prices ranging from $2.43 to $2.60.
