PROVIDENCE – Hasbro Children’s Hospital is ranked No. 29 among the top children’s hospitals nationwide, based on an analysis by Parents magazine.
“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of the staff at the hospital to provide the best possible care in the safest environment,” said Dr. Timothy J. Babineau, Hasbro Hospital’s president and CEO. “We are proud to be ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the country.”
Only one other hospital in New England was honored among the 2009 Best Children’s Hospitals. The report – published every other year by Parents magazine, and formerly by Child magazine – is designed to serve as a guide for parents.
Rankings are based on a survey distributed to hospitals nationwide that are members of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). The survey includes 250 questions developed on the basis of advice by child-health experts. It is designed to evaluate each institution’s survival rates, waiting times, volume of complex medical and surgical procedures, research studies, staff qualifications, patient safety tools, expertise in specialty care and more.
The final report honors 10 top hospitals – including Children’s Hospital of Boston, at No. 2 – and another 20 runners-up. It is available online at www.parents.com.
“We are honored to be recognized among some of the leading institutions in the country,” said Dr. Robert Klein, the new pediatrician in chief at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “This achievement should serve as a reminder to the parents in our community that their children can receive the best in family-centered care, close to home.”
The recognition comes as Hasbro Children’s Hospital prepares to celebrate the 14th anniversary of its opening on Feb. 14, 1994.
The hospital previously has been recognized for its Draw-A-Breath asthma program, its diabetes care and its Injury Prevention Center. It specializes in minimally invasive surgery for infants and children, including New England’s only established program for in-utero laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital – a division of Rhode Island Hospital – is a member of the Lifespan nonprofit health care system, which also includes The Miriam, Bradley and Newport hospitals.
