FALL RIVER – Despite facing a series of federal indictments, Fall River Mayor Jasiel F. Correia II will be back on the ballot for a mayoral election in November reported the Fall River Herald News. Correia finished second to city School Committee member Paul Coogan in a special election held Tuesday, with the top two finishers automatically appearing on the ballot for the Nov. 5 election.
Correia will once again be running for the top position in Fall River, despite having been indicted by the federal government on a series of charges, including extortion, wire fraud and filing false tax returns.
Fall River City Council had voted to temporarily remove Correia from office in September following his arrest on the extortion charges, which were related to an alleged scheme to force people applying for licenses to sell marijuana in the city to pay the mayor. Council does not have the power to permanently remove the mayor from office. His term runs through January.
