PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island housing authorities were allocated $19.9 million in annual funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund Program, HUD announced Tuesday.
“This funding will assist Rhode Island public housing agencies as they work to provide the best housing possible for their residents,” said David Tille, HUD New England regional administrator, in a statement.
Capital Funds Program grants can be used to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize public housing in a community, and are typically utilized for large-scale improvements.
The following Rhode Island housing authorities received grants this year:
- Housing Authority Providence: $5.7 million
- Woonsocket Housing Authority: $3.2 million
- The Housing Authority of the City of Newport: $2.2 million
- Housing Authority of the City of Pawtucket: $2.1 million
- Cranston Housing Authority: $1.1 million
- Warwick Housing Authority: $877,043
- East Providence Housing Authority: $806,130
- Central Falls Housing Authority: $627,134
- Lincoln Housing Authority: $476,436
- West Warwick Housing Authority: $427,813
- Bristol Housing Authority: $318,370
- Coventry Housing Authority: $310,288
- Johnston Housing Authority: $251,878
- Cumberland Housing Authority: $245,649
- Warren Housing Authority: $241,074
- Town of Westerly Housing Authority: $222,374
- North Providence Housing Authority: $203,896
- South Kingstown Housing Authority: $190,819

In Bristol County, Mass., HUD announced $10 million in grants for the following housing authorities:
- New Bedford Housing Authority: $4.9 million
- Fall River Housing Authority: $3.9 million
- Taunton Housing Authority: $1.2 million
- Swansea Housing Authority: $14,421
HUD’s Capital Fund Program provides funding to approximately 3,100 public housing authorities nationwide.
