ISO New England Inc., which oversees
the power supply for 6.5 million customers in parts of the U.S.
Northeast, said it filed a plan with federal regulators for
independent management of the region’s transmission grid.
The plan for a Regional Transmission Organization, or RTO,
was filed in conjunction with power sellers and generators and
utilities that own transmission lines in the six-state New
England region, the company said in a statement. It was filed
with the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
The commission has encouraged utilities to form RTO’s to
facilitate wholesale power transactions and promote competition
and reliability. There are two FERC-approved RTO’s, one in the
mid-Atlantic states and one in the Midwest.
