J. David Smith has been named director of public safety at Roger Williams University.
He had previously been the Narragansett chief of police since 2002.
He also served as chief of the Westerly Police Department, where he worked for more than 20 years.
Smith was co-chair of the town of Narragansett/University of Rhode Island Coalition and has been an adjunct lecturer at Roger Williams.
