Two years ago Pawtucket Red Sox ownership made a unilateral $85 million proposal to build a new stadium in Providence that would have left the state on the hook for most of the funding. That plan failed to generate enough support. Now the team has come back with a new $83 million (not including interest on borrowing) proposal that has the PawSox taking on a much bigger share of the costs and the state much less.
Unlike the 2015 plan, the new pitch calls for the park to be publicly owned and for the team to stay in Pawtucket. The PawSox worked with R.I. Commerce Corp. and city leaders to craft the proposal, which has been criticized by some for seeking support from taxpayers outside Pawtucket. What do you think?
