PROVIDENCE – Dr. John Lonks, an infectious disease specialist at The Miriam Hospital as well as a researcher and associate professor of medical science at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, has been named the 2017 Dr. Charles C.J. Carpenter Outstanding Physician of the Year at the hospital.

The Miriam Hospital Medical Staff Association and hospital administrators sponsor the award, which honors peer-nominated physicians for achievement in medicine, patient care, leadership and professionalism. Lonks was nominated for the award by Dr. David Marcoux, an internist at The Miriam.

“He has worked tirelessly and ably on behalf of patients, physicians and the Miriam,” said Marcoux in nominating Lonks. “I think it’s time that his selfless efforts, his great care of patients and respect for all the members of the Miriam community is recognized.”

Dr. Charles Carpenter was The Miriam’s physician in chief from 1986-1998 and established the hospital’s Immunology Center. He was known for helping fight disease in developing nations.
