Mercury Computer Systems second quarter below forecasts

Chelmsford, Mass-based Mercury Computer Systems Inc., which makes computer imaging systems for the military, said its fiscal second-quarter sales and earnings missed its previous forecasts, Bloomberg News reported.

Mercury Computer expects to report sales of $36 million to $37 million for the quarter ended Dec. 31, the company said in a release distributed by Business Wire on Jan. 3. Earnings were 13 cents to 17 cents a share. The company was expected to earn 26 cents according to the average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call.

The company’s sales were hurt by the protracted approval of next year’s defense budget in Congress, Jay Bertelli, the company’s president and chief executive, said in a statement.
