The Rhode
Island Lottery Commission yesterday approved adding up to 1,825
video slot machines at the state’s two gambling locations.
The change will bring the total of slots at the facilities,
the Lincoln Park dog racing track and Newport Grand Jai Alai, to
4,303. The machines could start being installed within a week, the businesses have said.
Gov. Donald Carcieri, a Republican, testified in
favor of the expansion, saying it would add $90 million in state
revenue and help with a projected budget deficit next year.
Carcieri has said he wants to
increase the state’s share of slot profits, currently 52 percent
at Lincoln Park and 57.5 percent at Newport.
