PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University sophomore Frances Mulligan was a member of the all-female team honored for the most entrepreneurial hack at the inaugural SheHacks Boston competition.
“Competing in SheHacks was a great opportunity to meet so many young women pursuing common goals in a field that is typically dominated by men,” said Mulligan in prepared remarks.
She joined five additional teammates from other New England-based institutions to create a virtual reality app designed to assist animal shelters in their search for donors and adopters, and in efforts to socialize the animals.
“As a software engineering major,” she added, “I developed the confidence and skills necessary to step out of my comfort zone and participate in this innovative contest.”
As a member of the winning team, Mulligan was awarded a chance to pitch the team’s app to venture capitalists and earn $25,000 in seed funding.
SheHacks Boston, which hosted over 1,000 participants, was designed to encourage young women pursuing education-based technology and careers.
