
PROVIDENCE – The NanoSteel Company Inc. last week announced the launch of its LPA Screen product line, which was recently on display the Coal-Gen Conference & Exhibition in Pittsburgh.
The advanced-material firm has expanded the application of its Super Hard Steel 8000 thermal coating spray with the introduction of the product line, now using it as a protective coating for large particle ash screens in coal-fired power plants.
“NanoSteel SHS 8000 is [already] a proven thermal spray coating material in power generation for protecting boiler tubes and components in dry scrubber units,” said NanoSteel president and CEO Dave Paratore. “We are expanding this material’s use for operators/owners of coal plants with SCR [selective catalytic reduction] systems.”
The screens are designed to increase the life of SCR systems in power plants by protecting the systems from the damaging particles produced by burning coal. They can be made to fit new or existing screen systems, and are only for use in power plants that use wet scrubbers to reduce emissions.
“By protecting the catalyst bed from LPA contamination, ammonia slippage will be minimized, resulting in lower operating costs and overall lower [Nitrogen Oxide] emissions,” Paratore said.
The NanoSteel Company provides a variety of alloys for thermal spraying and welding in the power generation, mining, cement, concrete, and oil and gas industries. Founded in Florida in 2002, the company relocated to Rhode Island in 2006. NanoSteel currently employs 25 people, with about half working in its Providence headquarters. It also has a research facility in Idaho.
