PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Health on Thursday alerted health care professionals and patients to a new recall by Tyco Healthcare Group LP (Covidien) of a lot of ReliOn hypodermic syringes that are mislabeled and could lead users to accidentally overdose.
The alert, passed on from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, involves ReliOn sterile, single-use, disposable, hypodermic syringes with permanently attached hypodermic needles. The items are sold only at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores.
Due to the mislabeling, the FDA warned, patients who use these syringes could get an overdose of as much as 2.5 times their intended dose of insulin. An overdose may lead to hypoglycemia, serious health consequences or death.
The recall applies to Lot Number 813900. The syringes were sold between Aug. 1 and Oct. 8. Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club are asking anyone who bought those syringes to return them to their local Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club pharmacy. Customers will be given replacement syringes.
