
PROVIDENCE – Providence College will use a $288,300 grant from the National Science Foundation to help pay for the purchasing of a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer that will allow for chemistry and biology research, the college announced.
The acquisition of the spectrometer is part of a collaborative project among PC, Rhode Island College and Bryant University. The equipment is expected to be installed in PC’s science complex by June 2020. The campus complex is in the second phase of large-scale renovation.
The spectrometer will cost $409,300 and will be used for research in synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry; experimental physical chemistry; polymer chemistry; and biochemistry/chemical biology, Providence College said.
PC already has a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, but its magnet has grown weaker over time.
In addition to the $288,300 grant from NSF’s Major Research Instrumentation program, the Rhode Island IDEA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence program committed $42,000 to the project, and PC donated $79,000.
Since the NSF grant was awarded, PC, RIC and Bryant will share the spectrometer once it’s installed at Providence College.
The principal investigators of the project are: Seann Mulcahy, lead principal investigator, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at PC; Chin Hin Leung, Rhode Island College; Maria E. Carroll, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at PC; Christopher Laperle, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at PC; and Christopher W. Reid, Bryant University.
