PROVIDENCE – A change.org petition that recommends that Amazon.com Inc. buy and preserve Benny’s 31 retail stores is on the cusp of attaining its goal of 5,000 signatures, the threshold in which the petition is sent to Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, the petition had fewer than 300 signatures remaining before the campaign takes effect. The company is currently slated to shut down by the end of 2017.
The creator of the petition, William B. from Cambridge, Mass., reasons in his petition that Benny’s and Amazon have similarities as places one could go to buy anything. The petition also calls for Amazon to keep the store largely the way that is.
“It’s flattering,” Benny’s co-owner Arnold Bromberg told Providence Business News, about the number of backers who have signed campaign, but he noted that he didn’t know more about the change.org petition beyond its existence.
Bromberg did say that the company had already explored the option of a sale before deciding to close up shop.
