PROVIDENCE – The year-over-year Rhode Island construction-employment growth rate in May was the highest in New England at 3.6%, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Friday.
The growth rate was the No. 22 highest in the nation. West Virginia had the highest yearly growth rate for the month of any country at 26.5%. Vermont had the fastest contraction rate of any state, declining 5.9%. Texas added the most jobs year over year in the sector, growing 35,200 to 770,500 jobs. Construction employment increased in 39 states and Washington, D.C., year over year.
Rhode Island construction employment increased 700 jobs year over year to 19,900 in May.
New England construction-employment shifts in May year over year:
- Rhode Island: Increased 3.6% to 19,900 jobs
- New Hampshire: Increased 3% to 27,600 jobs
- Connecticut: Increased 1.4% to 59,100 jobs
- Massachusetts: Declined 0.4% to 157,400 jobs
- Maine: Declined 4.1% to 28,100 jobs
- Vermont: Declined 5.9% to 14,300 jobs
