PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island will receive $17.1 million in federal funds to combat the opioid crisis, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday.
The funds come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The R.I. Department of Health will receive $4.5 million from the CDC to better track overdose data as closely to real time as possible, HHS said, supporting the state’s efforts to prevent overdoses. Rhode Island was one of 47 states receiving CDC funds for the data program.
The state will receive $12.6 million in SAMHSA’s State Opioid Response grants. The program provides flexible funding to states to support prevention, treatment and recovery services, tailored to local needs. Funding for the program was allocated by Congress in 2018, HHS said. Rhode Island’s funding was part of $932 million in program funding this year.
