PROVIDENCE – A judge this month sentenced a Providence-based businessman to 46 months in federal prison for tax evasion. The sentencing of Neil Stierhoff follows a June 2007 conviction on charges he failed to pay taxes on nearly $1.2 million in income that he earned between 1999 and 2002.
Judge Mary M. Lisi also fined Stierhoff $40,000 and ordered him to pay all backs taxes, plus interest and penalties.
According to a news release from U.S. Attorney Robert Clark Corrente, Stierhoff failed to pay taxes on his income, which he earned selling electronic testing equipment by mail, in person and on eBay, the online auction Web site. To conceal his income, the release said, Stierhoff did business under several aliases, including Joseph Adams, Adams Associates and Universal Audio.
