After rising for seven consecutive weeks, including last week’s 8-cent spike, Rhode Island gasoline prices are starting the new year a penny lower, according to AAA Southern New England.
AAA’s Jan. 2 survey found self-serve, unleaded regular averaging $2.419 per gallon, down one cent from the Dec. 26 average. One year ago at this time, the average price was $2.259.
The decline was the state’s first since early November – before the general election.
The range in prices for self-serve regular in the latest survey was 25 cents, from a low of $2.309 to a high of $2.559, the nonprofit auto club said. Wider ranges were reported for other grades of fuel, and AAA advised motorists to shop around for the best prices.
Average self-serve prices for other grades of fuel were $2.539 per gallon for midgrade unleaded; $2.679 for premium unleaded; and $2.769 for diesel.
