Rhode Island will receive $1.68 million for technology to improve safety on the Providence River Bridge and for the University of Rhode Island to research the efficiency of future transportation systems. The U.S. Department of Transportation informed U.S. Sen. Jack Reed of the grants, a Reed press release stated.
URI will receive $1.36 million for transportation-related research at the University Transportation Center, which specializes in surface intermodal transportation systems and advanced transportation infrastructure.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has been awarded $320,000 to install sensors on the Providence River Bridge to monitor, measure and report on the safety and performance of the bridge’s high performance steel for the signature bridge for the Interstate 195 relocation project.
The sensors can provide data on stresses incurred during construction as well as monitor degradation, cracking and any structural failure.
