PROVIDENCE – In support of the Feinstein Junior Leadership Scholarship Endowment Fund, Rhode Island College announced Monday a $500,000 gift from the Feinstein Foundation.
Calling the gift “transformational,” RIC President Frank D. Sánchez said in a statement it “will provide a pathway for incoming freshmen who are interested in education to pursue their dreams.”
In a news release, RIC, the state’s only public college, called the gift “significant” and said it builds on previous gifts by local philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of the Feinstein Foundation.
In a statement, Feinstein said his hope for the gift is to “make college more accessible to those of my former junior scholars who wish to join the noble profession of teaching and make a positive difference in lives of others.”
As of Monday, RIC’s Feinstein Junior Leadership Scholarship Endowment Fund stands at $1.25 million. Scholarships target first-time freshmen who were enrolled in the Feinstein Junior Scholar program at one of 166 Rhode Island elementary and middle schools, with preference given to those pursuing education majors.
