PROVIDENCE – The Obama administration has announced that the R.I. Public Transit Authority will receive a $345,000 grant to install energy-efficient, compact-fluorescent light fixtures at four facilities.
“The [Rhode Island Public Transit Authority] is showing how investing in green transportation not only helps the planet and strengthens our economy, but also creates jobs in the state,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.
RIPTA said the new lighting was suggested to its leaders as part of an energy audit conducted by Northern Energy Services Inc., a Northborough, Mass.-based lighting and energy management company.
The proposal was one of 43 nationwide chosen by the administration to receive money from the $100 million Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) program, which was funded by the economic stimulus law signed by President Barack Obama in February.
