Senior centers track steps, earn grants from Blue Cross

BLUE CROSS & Blue Shield of Rhode Island launched its first Step Up Challenge this year, awarding grants of $2,500 to three senior centers that logged the most steps.

PROVIDENCE – In response to Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s Step up Challenge, seniors across Rhode Island logged millions of steps last month, and three senior centers earned grants of $2,500 each.

Winners, from three regions in the state, were awarded the money for use on health and wellness activities.

The challenge inspired participating senior centers to log a total of 141,780,081 steps in September.

“We are thrilled with how many older Rhode Islanders participated in our first-ever Step Up Challenge and for the support they showed to senior citizens around the state,” said Ivette Luna, manager of consumer engagement at Blue Cross.

Winners were:

  • Northern region – North Providence Mancini Center, which logged 2,763,450 total steps.
  • East Bay region – Benjamin Church Senior Center, which logged 9,468,402 total steps.
  • Southern region – Cranston Senior Center, which logged 4,763,804 total steps.

Blue Cross will sponsor a month of fitness programming to runner-ups Cumberland Senior Center, Portsmouth Senior Center and Coventry Senior Center.

More than 1,300 people registered for the Step Up Challenge, which kicked off on Sept. 1 with walks in Warwick, Bristol and Lincoln.
