BURRILLVILLE – The R.I. Department of Transportation has ordered the Shippee Bridge on Route 98 in Harrisville restricted to one lane at a time and imposed a 3-ton weight limit, according to the Town of Burrillville.
A detour route has been posted for vehicles weighing more than 3 tons, the town said this week. The limitations follow a DOT inspection of the bridge, which crosses the Nipmuc River.
To permit repairs, the DOT expects to close Shippee Bridge for six weeks beginning April 1.
Meanwhile, according to the DOT, the Henderson Bridge between East Providence and the East Side of Providence also is slated for “rehabilitation” this spring. And a detour has been posted at the Frenchtown Road bridge over Route 4, in North Kingstown, which is already closed for repairs.
Since July, the state agency has placed a 22-ton weight limit on the Pawtucket River Bridge on Route 95, in an effort to extend its lifespan. A preliminary design and estimate of replacement costs are due from the DOT in about four months. (READ MORE)
The Sakonnet Bridge on Route 24 in Portsmouth also is subject to a 22-ton weight limit.
