The recent resignations of two top administrators at South County Hospital in South Kingstown has created some speculation but no proof that big changes are in store for one of the state’s few remaining independent hospitals.
Patrick Muldoon, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer, and Philip E. Tracy, who recently resigned as vice president and chief financial officer, both said the 100-bed hospital is well-positioned to remain independent and competitive into the near future. Whether that will change is anyone’s guess, they said.
The hospital, which is loosely allied with the state’s dominant Lifespan health care system, has “a couple of things that make us unique and put us in a very different place than other hospitals,” Muldoon said. In our market, “the population is increasing whereas others are decreasing.”
“We manage efficiently and historically have the lowest length of stay in the state,” he said. “We’re not fearful that managed care is going to bypass us.”
The hospital last Thursday opened a $7.4-million medical building on the hospital campus in Wakefield. The 48,000-square-foot building will provide office space to some 36 physicians and is part of an overall
