Stem Cells awarded NIH grant

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. — Biotechnology company Stem Cells, Inc., which was formerly known as CytoTherapeutics and which moved operations from Rhode Island to California, has been awarded a two-year, $300,000 per year grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Small Business Innovation Research Office.

Stem Cells, which focuses on stem cell-based therapies to treat diseases of the central nervous system, liver and pancreas, said the funding would be used for further work on its liver stem cell program. The company is using liver stem cell and progenitor cell research to develop potential therapies for human hepatitis viruses.
