NARRAGANSETT – The De La Salle Christian Brothers this week announced plans to build an age-restricted community at the brotherhood’s property on Ocean Road.
The age-restricted development – dubbed De La Salle at Black Point – will include affordable apartments along with market-rate homes and less-expensive condominiums the brotherhood described as “work-force housing.” The lower-cost units were included to better align the development with the brotherhood’s mission, as well as help the town meet the 10-percent affordable housing threshold required by the R.I. Low and Moderate Income Housing Act, as revised in 2004, the organization said.
“For several years, the De La Salle Christian Brothers have been investigating the potential to develop a portion of our property in Narragansett,” Brother Edmond Precourt, FSC, superior of the brotherhood’s Long Island-New England District, said in a Tuesday statement.
The proposal, he continued, is “the result of a very careful and rigorous evaluation process designed to determine the most responsible and beneficial use of our property. It is driven by mission and community service, not by profit.”
The group’s plan calls for 21 market-rate houses, 17 market-rate and 14 work-force condos and an 80-unit affordable-living apartment building for the elderly, all of which would be constructed on 60 acres of the 105-acre site. Groundbreaking for the project is tentatively scheduled for late 2009.
An informational hearing on the project is slated for Monday, May 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the De La Salle Christian Brothers’ Long Island-New England District headquarters, at 635 Ocean Road in Narragansett.
