WEST WARWICK – Tides Family Services Inc., a human services nonprofit offering programming for children and young adults, has named Patrick J. Kinney as the chair of its board of directors.
Now retired, Kinney most recently worked as CEO of Keystone, a Pennsylvania-based property and casualty broker, before transitioning to serve on the company’s board, the nonprofit announced Sept. 18.
Kinney comes to the nonprofit having experienced similar childhood challenges to those of Tides’ clients, according to the announcement. The organization aims to keep children in their homes – and out of group homes or foster are – through programming, including counseling, mentoring, in-home behavioral health and outpatient services, in addition to family functioning support, according to the Tides website.
“I know personally that where a young person starts does not have to define where they end up. Having people who believe in you, provide support and create opportunities can change the course of a life,” Kinney said in the release. “That is what I see in the work Tides does every day, and it is a mission that means a great deal to me.”
Before joining Keystone, Kinney worked at Travelers Insurance for 38 years, ending his tenure as executive vice president.
“Patrick brings tremendous leadership and governance experience, but what makes him especially well-suited for Tides is his personal connection to our mission,” Beth A. Bixby, CEO of Tides Family Services, said in the announcement.
Kinney graduated from Pennsylvania State University with his bachelor’s degree in business logistics and earned his MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. Penn State established the Patrick and Patricia Kinney Scholarship, named after Kinney and his wife, and Kinney serves on the board of the university’s Risk Management Department.
“[Kinney] understands that a young person’s circumstances do not have to determine their future. He knows the difference that opportunity, support and people who believe in you can make, and he wants to give that back to the next generation,” Bixby said.
