Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, said February sales at stores open at least a
year are increasing near the high end of its expectations as
shoppers bought more spring clothing and food.
The discounter had forecast a gain of as much as 5 percent
from the year-earlier month. Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart
updated results through Friday in a recorded call.
Consumers bought more men’s, women’s and girls’ clothing,
including coats, last week, Wal-Mart said. Chief Executive H. Lee
Scott has added more profitable private-label goods such as
George infant sleepers and boys’ dress shirts to boost margins.
More shoppers came to the stores than a year ago, when a
Presidents Day weekend snowstorm hurt sales.
