PROVIDENCE – A Massachusetts woman pleaded guilty to defrauding a Providence company of more than $557,000 and to willfully filing false tax returns in U.S. District Court in Providence Monday, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Jill Martinho, of Swansea, pleaded guilty to causing a loss of $557,974 to Walco Electric Co., a company that specializes in the optimization of electro-magnetic and automated process equipment, by overcharging the company for authorized reimbursements for the use of her credit card for business-related expenses. Martinho, the company’s controller, who worked for the company since 2005, was entitled to reimbursements of roughly $459,224 but charged the company roughly $1 million through the use of fraudulently created credit card statements.

Martinho also did not report the income to the Internal Revenue Service and did not pay the taxes due on the funds to the IRS. She is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
