NEWPORT – More than 50 nonprofit organizations serving Newport County residents will share $290,000 in grants from the Rhode Island Foundation to support programs focused on education, housing, food access, healthcare, social services and arts activities.
The funding was awarded through the foundation’s Newport County Fund, which provides grants of up to $10,000 to strengthen existing programs, support advocacy efforts, launch new initiatives and encourage collaborations that address community needs.

Among the recipients, Child & Family in Middletown received $7,200 to assist older adults facing unmet needs and safety concerns. The organization said funds may be used to provide support such as rental assistance, food, utility payments and other emergency services.
The Friends of the Jamestown Philomenian Library received $5,000 to install an upgraded audio-visual system in the library’s meeting hall, which is used for educational, recreational and community programming.
The Housing Hotline in Newport was awarded $10,000 for a temporary shelter program that provides short-term hotel accommodations for people experiencing homelessness while longer-term housing arrangements are secured.
The James L. Maher Center in Middletown received $10,000 to offer workshops focused on communication, conflict resolution, emotional regulation and other social skills for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center received $10,000 to support a satellite food pantry in Newport’s North End that provides pantry services and weekly distributions of fruits and vegetables.
Other organizations receiving funding include the Aquidneck Food Pantry, Bike Newport, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, the Conanicut Island Sailing Foundation, Fort Adams Trust, Newport Gulls, Newport Historical Society, Newport Pride, Newport Tree Conservancy, Norman Bird Sanctuary, Sail Newport, RENEWport, SVCP St. Joseph Newport, The Village Common, Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice, and the Women’s Resource Center.
The Rhode Island Foundation said the Newport County Fund, established in 2002, has awarded more than $6.6 million in grants to organizations serving Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth and Tiverton.
Since 2023, the foundation reports awarding $14.3 million to Newport County nonprofits through various grant programs.
