NASSAU, Bahamas – A compact establishing both an exchange-student program between the University of Rhode Island and the College of the Bahamas and a joint program in marine affairs was announced today by the R.I. National Guard.
The agreement was signed by URI President Robert L. Carothers and Janyne M. Hodder, president of the College of the Bahamas, in a ceremony Friday at Hodder’s residence. Also present were John Rood, the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, and Brent Hardt, chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy.

Details of the agreement were worked out by Lynn Pasquerella, URI’s vice provost for academic affairs, and Linda Davis, vice president for research and graduate studies at the College of the Bahamas, who also attended the signing.
“We are thankful to the R.I. National Guard for uncovering this tremendous opportunity for collaboration,” Carothers said. The agreement will expand each institution’s access to marine-affairs facilities and field research locations.
The two colleges were first introduced by the Guard’s State Partnership Program, which brings together U.S. states and territories with partner nations.
Last week’s visit to Nassau also brought members of the R.I. Economic Development Council, Newport Visitors Bureau and Newport County Chamber of Commerce together with their Bahamian partners to discuss common problems and business opportunities.
Since December 2005, the Guard said, the Rhode Island partnership program has resulted in collaborations between the Providence and state police and the Royal Bahamian Police Force, and between Bahamian firefighters, emergency management professionals and correctional officers and their Ocean State counterparts.
