Groundbreaking slated for Blue Sphere project in Johnston

JOHNSTON – A groundbreaking will be held May 28 for Blue Sphere Corp.’s waste-to-energy project.

The event will be held at 293-303 Scituate Ave. starting at 10:30 a.m.

The Blue Sphere facility, a joint venture with an affiliate of York Capital Management, will produce 3.2 megawatts of clean energy from uneaten food that would normally end up in local landfills.

That electricity will then be sold to National Grid to provide power to local homes and businesses, according to a news release from the clean energy company.

This project is the first of its kind for Rhode Island, Blue Sphere said.

According to information provided by Blue Sphere, the National Resource Defense Council estimates that approximately 40 percent of food is wasted in the United States every year, amounting to a $165 billion loss.

Blue Sphere said their solution is a win-win for all involved.

“This facility is the ultimate landfill because we take waste in the front end and nothing coming out. There’s no smell just electricity and compost,” Blue Sphere CEO Shlomi Palas said in a statement.

Blue Sphere plans to be operational in Johnston by the end of the fourth quarter.
Orbit Energy Inc., based in Raleigh, N.C., co-developed the project.
