PROVIDENCE – Three Rhode Island-based schools have been named 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools according to the Rhode Island Department of Education Thursday.
The schools – Providence’s Classical High School, Community Elementary School in Cumberland and Fishing Cove Elementary School in North Kingstown – were selected for their overall academic excellence and progress in closing achievement gaps.

Classical High School and Community Elementary School were honored as Exemplary High Performing Schools and Fishing Cove Elementary School was designated an Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing School this year.
In 2016 Barrington High School (academic excellence), South Kingstown’s Peace Dale Elementary School (academic excellence) and Kent Heights Elementary School in East Providence (closing achievement gaps) were recognized.
“This level of achievement requires incredible commitment at every level, from the school and district leaders to the classroom teachers and to the families supporting students at home. Each has a role to play in supporting student success and closing achievement gaps, and each has contributed to this distinction,” said Ken Wagner, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education in a statement.
The three Rhode Island schools, and their counterparts from across the United States, will be celebrated at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 6 and 7.

Now in its 35th year, the nationwide recognition program has honored more than 8,500 public and private elementary, middle and high schools.
