PAWTUCKET – The R.I. Department of Health tonight is hosting a second meeting to hear public comment on Care New England’s planned shuttering of Memorial Hospital.
The meeting will give the public an additional opportunity to provide comment on CNE’s application to close the emergency department at Memorial Hospital, as well as CNE’s application to transfer the primary care services currently provided under Memorial Hospital’s license to Warwick-based Kent Hospital’s license.

Last week, the Department of Health ordered Memorial Hospital to stop taking new patients and to stop performing surgeries and emergency services, effective Dec. 1, until the applications to continue services at the hospital are reviewed, citing a lack of adequate staff.
The meeting will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elizabeth Baldwin School, 50 Whitman St. in Pawtucket. The meeting will take place in the cafeteria. The first community meeting was held Nov. 27.
The department is encouraging the public to provide input on the potential effects on the community of the planned changes to the hospital’s services. RIDOH officials at the meeting will not be able to answer questions about the applications.
Copies of the applications to close the emergency department and to transfer the primary care services to Kent Hospital’s license can be found online for the Emergency Department application and the primary care application.
In addition to speaking at this meeting, members of the public can submit written comment.
