NEWPORT – Sister Jane Gerety, president of Salve Regina University, plans to retire in June 2019, Gerety announced Wednesday afternoon.
Gerety was appointed president of the university in July 2009, having previously been a member of the university’s board of trustees since 1995. Prior to her arrival at Salve Regina, Gerety worked as the executive board officer for St. Joseph’s Health System in Atlanta. Gerety received her bachelor’s degree in French from Mount Saint Agnes College in Baltimore, her master’s degree in French from Middlebury College and a doctorate degree in English from the University of Michigan.

Under her tenure as president, Salve Regina underwent a series of expansion and renovations, including the introduction of a doctorate program in nursing and a $26 million renovation of the university’s flagship academic building.
The university’s president also oversaw a major fundraising campaign that resulted in the donation of over 100 gifts that totaled over $15 million to support the university.
“This has been the best job in the world. I’ve cherished my work, together with our faculty — of ensuring that every Salve graduate enters the ‘real world’ with the best chance to succeed — both personally and professionally,” Gerety said in a statement.
Salve Regina’s board of trustees has formed a national search committee to find its next president, according to a university press release. Gerety will serve as president through the 2018-19 academic year.
