PROVIDENCE – In a ranking released Wednesday by the Boston Globe – ironically also the first day in 2018 to break 80 degrees in Providence – three Rhode Island beaches were named among the top 20 New England beaches to visit this summer.
Easton’s Beach in Newport, home to Save The Bay Exploration Center & Aquarium, was highlighted for its handicapped accessibility and family-friendly atmosphere.

The Globe noted, “For those who aren’t timid swimmers, the western end of the beach by the Cliff Walk is a designated surf zone.”
Narragansett’s Scarborough State Beaches, the second Rhode Island listing, were also recognized for their family-friendly atmosphere, swimming environment and trails.
The piece highlighted the beaches’ kid friendliness and noted, “Also on the north end, Black Point trail leads from the atmospheric ruins of what some say was an old carriage house up along the rocky coastline.”
Third was the South Kingstown Town Beach, which offers a bar and food as well as swimming and surfing opportunities.
“Some beachgoers bring charcoal so they can cook burgers on the town grills,” the Globe wrote. “But it’s perhaps more fun to head to the Ocean Mist at the east end of the quarter-mile strand. The classic beach bar serves all three meals and cranks up the music at night.”
In total, six Massachusetts beaches, five Maine beaches, four Connecticut beaches and two New Hampshire beaches were listed by the Boston Globe.
