Rhode Island Author Marie Force Wraps Up 2013 with Fifth New York Times Bestseller
It’s a year worth celebrating for Rhode Island author Marie Force, who finished 2013 with her fifth New York Times bestseller, Meant for Love, published Nov. 18. Her first book to make the list last March was Waiting for Love, Book 8 of the RI–inspired McCarthys of Gansett Island Series. Last month, Force had a lot to be thankful for, as Meant For Love, Book 10 book in the McCarthy Series, hit No. 10 on the New York Times e-book list, No. 16 on the New York Times combined e-book and print bestseller list, and No. 42 on the USA Today bestseller list. Meant for Love also made the Indie Reader bestseller list at No. 2. Other Force titles on the list this year are Time for Love, Book 9 in the McCarthy Series, The Wreck and Fatal Mistake, Book 6 in the Fatal Series.
To date, the McCarthys of Gansett Island Series has sold 1 million copies, and Force has sold more than 2 million books overall since her debut in 2008.
“It’s really thrilling to see a Rhode Island-set series hitting the bestseller lists and bringing visitors to my home state to visit Block Island, the inspiration for my fictional Gansett Island,” Force said. “I love to share my beautiful home state with my readers.”
Readers familiar with Rhode Island will feel right at home with the McCarthys of Gansett Island Series and its settings, including the island’s bluffs and lighthouse, the ferry, two harbors and the Salt Pond, all fashioned after places on Block Island, Force’s “favorite place in the world.” She plans to share these real-life settings with readers during her Memorial Day Reader Weekend 2014 in Newport and Block Island. Force’s Treading Water Series, named after the first book she completed and one of four in a series, was also inspired by RI. To bring her books to readers in her home state, Force has donated her 18 self-published books to RI libraries, which report the books have been in hot demand by readers.
Force graduated from Middletown High School in 1984 and double-majored in journalism and political science at the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1988. She began her writing career at RI community newspapers—the Warwick Beacon and the Narragansett Times—where she learned to write lots of copy on seemingly impossible deadlines. The fast pace of newspaper writing has served her well, with seven new books written in 2013.
Meant for Love is Force’s 28th novel, the 18th she has self-published, rendering her a trailblazer in the publishing world. Authors aware of Force’s expertise often seek her advice and in response, this year she held a widely praised Independent Author Symposium in Warwick. The symposium provided authors with the information they need to be successful in publishing, marketing and selling books on their own. Another offshoot of Force’s publishing experience is the E-book Formatting Fairies, a service that prepares books for e-book and print distribution for self-published authors.
2014 promises to be another busy year for Force. She’s planning a novella as well as Books 11 and 12 of the McCarthy Series. The Green Mountain Series, set in Vermont, will kick off with three books, All You Need Is Love (February), I Want to Hold Your Hand (June) and I Saw Her Standing There (November). Her Fatal Series, originally available only in e-book format, will also be coming to paperback. Look for Fatal Affair (March), Fatal Justice (April), Fatal Consequences & Fatal Destiny (May), Fatal Flaw (July) and Fatal Deception (September) everywhere books are sold. Fatal Jeopardy, Fatal Series Book 7, will be out on March 24.
